Drop Coverage

A pick-and-roll defense where the screened defender's man "drops" back toward the paint instead of fighting over the screen or switching, prioritizing containing the roll man and protecting the rim over pressuring the ball-handler immediately. It's the conservative option: you concede a mid-range pull-up jumper to the ball-handler in exchange for taking away the easy roll to the basket. Drop coverage got exposed hard as offenses got better at shooting off the dribble, which is a big part of why switching and blitzing schemes became more fashionable — but drop coverage never actually disappeared, because giving up a contested mid-range look is still a better bet than giving up a dunk.
