False Nine

A centre-forward who drops deep into midfield instead of holding the line against the centre-backs. The aim is to create a numbers problem: either a defender follows and leaves space behind, or nobody follows and the false nine is free to link play. It is about creating overloads, not about playing without a striker. FourFourTwo's false-nine breakdown traces how modern managers revived the role.
