Powerplay

A designated period early in a limited-overs innings — the first six overs in T20 and ODI cricket — where fielding restrictions force most fielders to stay inside the 30-yard circle, leaving the boundary far less protected than in the rest of the innings. The restriction exists to reward attacking batting and give bowling sides a genuine tactical dilemma: bowl defensively and concede fewer boundaries but risk building pressure slower, or attack the stumps and risk getting hit while the field is wide open. How a team handles the powerplay — whether they go hard for boundaries immediately or bat around it and accelerate later — has become one of the defining tactical debates in modern white-ball cricket, and it's a big part of why the format keeps evolving as fast as it does.
