Takedown defense
Takedown defense is a fighter's ability to stay on their feet against an opponent's attempts to bring the fight to the ground, and in a sport where the ground game can end a fight in seconds, it's one of the most decisive skills a fighter can have. The sprawl, driving the hips down and kicking the legs back the instant a takedown attempt starts, is the foundational defensive reaction, but elite takedown defense is really about the stuff that happens before that: footwork, distance management, and denying an opponent the clean entry they need in the first place. A fighter with poor takedown defense against a strong wrestler often spends an entire fight defending rather than attacking, which is exactly why judges weigh clean, sustained top control so heavily even when the fighter underneath isn't taking much real damage.
