The Ruck

A contest for the ball that forms after a tackle, where at least one player from each team binds over the ball on the ground and tries to drive the opposition off it, or protect it for their own side to recycle. Unlike a scrum, a ruck forms spontaneously wherever the tackle happens, and players who arrive can't touch the ball with their hands once it's on the ground inside the ruck. Winning quick ruck ball is one of the most underrated skills in rugby — a team that recycles possession in two or three seconds keeps the defense scrambling and off-balance, while slow ball gives defenders time to reset their line. Rule changes around ruck entry and "jackling" for turnovers get revisited constantly by World Rugby specifically because the balance between attacking recycling speed and defensive turnover opportunities shapes how the entire sport is played. World Rugby maintains the official laws governing rucks and breakdown play.
