Super-shoes didn't ruin distance running, they exposed how arbitrary the record book always was

The super-shoe debate always gets framed the same way: there was a pure era of honest running, and then carbon plates came along and broke it. I think that framing is a comforting myth, and it is worth saying out loud. The record book was never a clean measure of human ability sealed off from technology. Cinder tracks gave way to synthetic ones that hand energy back to the runner. Spikes got lighter and stiffer. Pacing lights, wave-light rabbits, altitude tents, timing accurate to the thousandth, even the specific bounce of a given track surface all shaped the numbers we treat as sacred. We just didn't notice the tech because it accreted slowly. Super-shoes did in three years what tracks and spikes did over fifty, so the seams show and everyone panics. That doesn't mean anything goes. There is a real line between a shoe that returns energy and one that actively adds it, and World Athletics has fumbled toward a stack-height rule to police it. But the honest position isn't 'protect the pure record,' it is 'decide what technology we accept and then compare like with like.' Pull the marathon [top lists on World Athletics](https://worldathletics.org/records/toplists) and you can basically date the shoe era from the slope of the curve. Pretending the pre-shoe times existed in some tech-free vacuum is just wrong. So can we retire the 'ruined the sport' line. The shoes made the arbitrary visible, nothing more. The genuinely interesting argument, the one [Athletics Illustrated has covered in depth](https://athleticsillustrated.com/world-athletics-supershoe-rules-may-not-be-what-you-think-they-are/), is where we draw the technology line now, not whether a line ever existed before.
