Count how many corporate patches a prelim fighter wears before anyone tells you what the pay problem actually is
Watch a prelim card walkout closely. Every fighter wears the exact same sponsor patches, because the promotion's apparel deal replaced whatever independent sponsorships a fighter used to be able to negotiate for themselves. Before that deal existed, a well-connected fighter could earn as much from personal sponsors, gyms, supplement brands, local businesses, as from the actual fight purse. That entire income stream is gone now for anyone not already famous enough to negotiate outside the standard deal. The base pay tells the same story from a different angle. A debuting fighter earns a minimum in the range of twelve or thirteen thousand dollars to show, the same again to win, out of which they're paying a coaching team, a training camp, and months of preparation. Stars at the top of a card make millions through pay-per-view points and bonuses that simply don't exist for anyone on the undercard. That's a normal, defensible gap in most sports. What's not normal is closing off the one supplemental income stream, independent sponsorship, that used to help close it a little. The promotion isn't wrong that a unified apparel deal looks cleaner on television. But cleaner for the broadcast and sustainable for the fighters actually cutting weight to be on that card are two completely different things, and the sport has been treating them as the same problem for a decade now.
