Financial Fair Play didn't level the pitch — it turned the elite into a closed shop

Every time a club gets charged with a Financial Fair Play breach, the timeline splits into two camps. 'Good, cheats punished' and 'the rules are rigged to protect the establishment.' I think the second camp is closer to right, but for the wrong reason. FFP was sold to us as a brake on reckless billionaire owners. What it actually does is tie how much you're allowed to spend to how much you already earn. And the clubs that earn the most are, surprise, the clubs that already win. Broadcast, commercial and matchday income at a Real Madrid, a Bayern, a top-six Premier League side dwarfs what a promoted club pulls in. So the spending ceiling FFP hands them sits miles above their rivals', by design. That isn't a loophole anyone's exploiting. It's the mechanism working exactly as written. A new owner can't just outspend the incumbents into relevance anymore. The gate is now 'grow your commercial revenue first,' and the incumbents have a 30-year head start plus a global fanbase you can't manufacture in three transfer windows. If you want a sense of how fast that arms race has escalated, [The Ball Business's breakdown of FFP](https://theballbusiness.com/what-financial-fair-play-actually-means-and-why-clubs-keep-breaking-it/) covers exactly how the rules entrench the clubs already on top. I'm not calling for a return to unlimited sugar-daddy spending. That had its own rot. I'm saying stop selling FFP as fairness. It protects a hierarchy. Real competitive balance looks like squad-cost caps tied to a league-wide pool and proper redistribution, not a rule that says you may spend in proportion to how big you already are.
