The UFC's interim title system creates confusion nobody actually asked for

An interim championship gets created when the real champion is injured or otherwise unavailable for an extended period, letting the next two ranked contenders fight for a title that's supposed to get unified with the real belt once the actual champion returns. In theory it keeps a division active. In practice it's produced years of confusion about who the "real" champion even is, interim champions who never actually get their unification fight, and cases where an interim title effectively became the real one through inactivity of the original champion. The stated purpose, division activity, is legitimate, injuries genuinely stall divisions for a year or more sometimes. But the execution has been inconsistent enough, some interim reigns unify quickly, others drag for years or just quietly get treated as equivalent to the real title without ever being unified, that the whole system reads more like a promotional tool for filling a card than a coherent title structure. If the UFC wants an activity mechanism for stalled divisions, a clearer, binding commitment to unification within a fixed window would fix most of the actual confusion. [Yahoo Sports' breakdown of interim titles](https://sports.yahoo.com/the-rise-of-ufc-interim-titles-and-why-theyre-mostly-meaningless-154337868.html) covers exactly why the confusion keeps recurring.
