Hot take that gets truer every single year: the relegation fight is a better watch than the title race. The title is usually decided by one or two super-clubs pulling clear by spring, and plenty of seasons it is basically over in March. The bottom of the table is chaos right up to the final whistle of the final day. Six or seven clubs, all terrified, all with everything to lose, results swinging survival from one to another in real time. Everton, Palace, Fulham, any given season half the league can get dragged into it, and the sheer desperation makes people do incredible and stupid things. Nobody makes a documentary about the fourth month of a title procession, but survival Sunday is appointment television. The Guardian live blogs on the final day are pure adrenaline. Give me the drop fight every time.

The emotional stakes are just higher too. Winning the league is joy, but losing a relegation battle can literally change a club's finances and identity for years. When you watch a bottom-three team you are watching people who know exactly what it costs to lose. That desperation is a big part of why the football is often uglier and so much more gripping.

Counterpoint from someone who loves a title race, a great two-horse fight that goes to the last day is unbeatable. The problem is we just do not get many of them anymore because the money gap at the top is so big. So by default, yeah, the relegation scrap is where the genuine uncertainty lives now, and uncertainty is the whole point of watching sport.
