Why do professional cyclists actually shave their legs? Is it really about aerodynamics?

I keep seeing the claim that pro cyclists shave their legs to go faster, that a hairy leg costs you meaningful watts in aerodynamic drag. But I've also seen people insist that's nonsense and the real reasons have nothing to do with speed. So which is it? If it's aero, how much time does it actually save over, say, a long Grand Tour stage? And if it isn't, why has leg-shaving been an almost ironclad rule in the pro peloton for a century? Genuinely trying to separate the marketing from the reality here, because both camps sound very sure of themselves.

The aerodynamic story is real but wildly overblown, and it's the least important reason. Wind-tunnel testing has suggested shaved legs can save a small number of watts over a sustained effort, but it's marginal and really only matters to time-triallists chasing every last second. For everyone else it's basically noise. The actual reasons are all about the crash-and-recover reality of the sport. When you hit the tarmac at 50kph, and every pro eventually does, road rash on a shaved leg is far easier to clean, dress and heal, with much less risk of infection from hair driven into the wound. Daily massage, which every rider gets, works better on bare skin and doesn't rip leg hair out by the roots. And taping and treating those wounds is simply less miserable without hair. Add a century of professional culture where shaved legs signal 'I'm a serious rider,' and you have a tradition that persists for practical medical reasons first, with aero a distant afterthought. To add the culture piece: in the pro ranks it's also a tribal marker. Rolling up to a serious group ride or a race with hairy legs quietly marks you as an outsider, fair or not. None of that is performance, but sport is full of these identity signals and cycling's is unusually strong. So the honest answer is a bit of aero, a lot of practical medical sense, and a big dose of tradition holding it all together.
