Grid Penalty

A punishment that moves a driver backward a fixed number of positions from where they actually qualified, typically issued for using more engine or gearbox components than the season's allocation permits, or for driving infractions in a previous session. A driver who qualifies on pole but picks up a 10-place grid penalty will actually start the race from 11th. Grid penalties turn qualifying into a genuinely complicated strategic puzzle in modern F1, teams sometimes deliberately take a big component-related penalty at a circuit where overtaking is easier, timing the cost for when it hurts least. When a penalty is larger than the number of cars ahead, the driver simply starts at the very back of the grid instead, which occasionally produces the strange sight of a genuinely fast car starting dead last through no fault of the driver's actual pace.
