Safety Car

A car deployed onto a racetrack to neutralize a race after an incident, bunching the field up behind it at reduced speed while marshals clear debris or attend to a crash, before racing resumes with a rolling restart. Drivers can't overtake behind the safety car except in specific circumstances, and the entire field effectively freezes in position until it comes back in. A safety car period is one of the biggest strategic wildcards in racing, because it compresses the time cost of a pit stop dramatically, a driver who pits while the field is bunched up behind the safety car loses far less relative track position than pitting during normal green-flag racing.
