Before the pile-on: I love the Ashes, the history is unmatched, and nothing feels like it in the moment. But step back. The WTC final is the one time the best red-ball side over a two-year cycle gets decided across every condition: spinning tracks, green seamers, flat decks, home and away. An Ashes win can be built on two home summers and a helpful toss. If we actually believe Test cricket is about being the best team in all conditions, the trophy that rewards a full cycle should carry more weight than beating one rival on familiar pitches. The problem is the WTC points system keeps changing and half the crowd cannot explain how a team qualified. Prestige needs legibility. Fix how easy the format is to follow and your argument gets a lot stronger.

Tradition is exactly why the Ashes matters more. It is not a logic contest, it is a hundred years of context you cannot manufacture. But I will grant that the WTC is the better measure of best team over a cycle.
