Say it quietly around the traditionalists but the biggest date in the cricket calendar is not a World Cup final anymore, it is the IPL auction. That is where the money actually moves, where careers are made overnight, where every board and player quietly plans their year around a single afternoon of bidding. Young players everywhere now dream of a franchise contract first and a national cap second, because one changes your life and the other pays a fraction of it. The scheduling fights, the workload debates, the players retiring from one format to chase another, all of it flows from franchise economics now. You can love it or hate it but pretending international cricket is still the centre of the sport is denial. The ICC still runs the global game on paper, but the gravity has shifted and it is not shifting back.

As someone who grew up on Test cricket this is a little painful to read and also completely correct. The talent pipeline in a lot of countries now openly optimises for T20 franchise value. You cannot blame a kid for that when the pay gap is that enormous. The boards created this themselves by underpaying the people who fill the stadiums.

I would push back a bit. The World Cup still creates the moments that make a player famous enough to be worth big auction money in the first place. The two things feed each other. But if you are asking which one the sport actually organises itself around now, then yeah, follow the money and it lands on the league every time.
