Blue flag

A blue flag tells a driver they're about to be lapped and must let the faster car through at the next reasonable opportunity, rather than fighting to hold position. It exists to stop backmarkers from disrupting a real fight further up the field, but the rule is more contested than it looks: 'the first available opportunity' is deliberately vague, and drivers, teams and stewards regularly disagree about what counts as one. A 2025 automatic-signalling failure at the Hungarian Grand Prix forced a manual backup system and produced exactly the chaos the automated system exists to prevent, including a public blow-up between team principals and engineers over who should've caught it. The rule sits at a genuine tension point: too lenient and it lets a lapped car meaningfully interfere with the real race; too strict and it punishes a driver for a car that simply appears in their mirrors at a bad moment.
